China's women volleyball team made history on Saturday after defeating Serbia in the finals to win the volleyball gold medal in the ongoing Rio Olympics, Reuters reported.

China defeated down Serbia in four sets 19-25, 25-17, 25-22, 25-23. The Chinese team played in the finals as they had done throughout the tournament at the Rio Olympics. They came together late and won points at crucial moments to get the better off their Serbian counterparts.

Saturday's victory gave China its third volleyball gold medal in Olympics history. The Chinese volleyball team had won gold medals in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics and at the 2004 Athens Olympics. China had also scooped bronze medals in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics and the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Coach Jenny Lang Ping was visibly overwhelmed after his team's emphatic victory. Ping also made history on Saturday by becoming the first to win a gold medal as a player and as a coach. Lang Ping was an important part of the gold medal team at 1984 Los Angeles Olympics.

China began its volleyball campaign at Rio with a disappointing loss to Netherlands in the first match. However, Chinese volleyball showed great improvement in their performances in the later half of the campaign. They made a stunning comeback to defeat the traditional powerhouse Brazil in the quarterfinal, and then won the revenge match against Netherlands in semis.

Zhu Ting's impressive performance in last three matches proved to be a defining factor for China. Zhu Ting earned 86 points in the last three matches, including 25 points in finals against Serbia.
