Affected by the upper Heilongjiang River, Heilongjiang Province is experiencing the largest floods in a century. Today, the highest peak of the Heilongjiang River's fourth flood reached Tongjiang City. Located on the border of Heilongjiang River and Songhuajiang River, Tongjiang is now under intense pressure of two roaring rivers into a dilemma.
Since August 23rd, the water level of Heilongjiang River has become the highest level comparing to the same period in previous years. Meanwhile, Nenjiang River has also been swollen by heavy rain. The floods from Nenjiang River, together with the floods from the branches of Songhuajiang River, mingled into Songhuajiang River, which caused the water level of Songhuajiang River rose rapidly. In Qingyuan County, Liaoning Province, many roads were destroyed by the heavy rainstorm. Furthermore, several villages have become isolated islands due to the heavy rain.
On August 26th, Shenyang military Region sent helicopters to monitor the floods from Tongjiang River to Fuyuanjiang River in the sky, and to rescue people stranded by the flood. Every few kilometers, flood fighters will open a temporary channel between the dam and the road nearby, in order to deliver supplies to the dam.
Since August 19th, Heixiazi Island has been completely submerged due to continuous downpours. Heixiazi Island is located on the easternmost tip of China. Actually, it is a sedimentary island divided between China and Russia. So far, the island has become an inundated area. The only entrance to the island from Mainland China has been closed because parts of the Wusu Bridge have been damaged due to the floods. At present, there are only a few buildings that can be seen above the water on Heixiazi Island. All construction projects on the island have been suspended, and all of the workers and residents have been evacuated, with only Chinese border guards still guarding on the island.
