A failed drug test has forced Cuban discuss player thrower, Yarleys Barrios, be give up her silver medal from the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The International Olympics Committee (IOC) confirmed the decision on Thursday.

Barrios has been ordered to return her 2008 silver medal as well as her 2012 bronze medal after tests confirmed the presence of diuretic and acetazolamide in her system.

In a statement, the IOC said Barrios, 33, "has the silver medal, the diploma, and the medalist pin obtained in the discus throw event withdrawn and is ordered to return these."

Another athlete who is facing a similar fate is Samuel Francis Adelebari. The IOC said that he failed a re-test and has been disqualified from a 100m race which he finished in 16th place.

A banned substance known as stanozolol was found in Francis's system, according to the IOC statement.

The two athletes were tested after the IOC decided to re-test them using a newly developed technique.

The two are among 98 athletes from the 2008 Beijing Olympics and 2012 London Olympics who have tested positive for banned substances after being re-tested.

Three Russian medalists are among six who were disqualified following the Rio Olympics on Wednesday.

The IOC added that the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) was mandated to make the necessary corrections following the new test results.

"The IAAF is requested to modify the results... accordingly and to consider any further action within its own competence," the IOC statement said.
