Filipino MMA Fighter Rene Catalan Defeats Chinese foe in Malaysia in ONE Championship Event

Filipino mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter Rene "D'Challenger"Catalan got the better of the Chinese fighter Zhang You Liang in three rounds to win by a unanimous decision on Friday at the Stadium Negara in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The MMA showdown was the Singapore-based mixed martial arts promotion's 47th event, and it featured 11 different professional bouts.

According to GMA News, 37-year-old Catalan was off to a good start. The professional MMA fighter was throwing heavy kicks to the head and body of his Chinese opponent. The fight eventually made its way to the canvass where the Filipino landed some grand blows on Zhang.

Both fighters traded blows in the opening seconds of the second round. Catalan scored a take-down then dealt damages to the 22-year-old Chinese with both hands.

After 15-minutes of action-packed bout, the judges awarded the fight to the Filipino by a unanimous decision.

The win marked Catalan's first victory as a mixed martial arts fighter, improving his record to 1-2 while Liang dropped to 0-3.

Meanwhile, in the night's main event, Rob Lisita of Australia looked to snap a three-fight skid as he clashed with the home crowd favorite Ev Ting of Malaysia.

According to Combat Press, Ting (12-3) did everything a little bit better than Lisita (14-9) over the course of three rounds, and was awarded a unanimous-decision victory for his efforts.
