Badminton's reigning men's singles world No. 1 Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia is expected to be seen in action in the upcoming Yonex Open Japan 2016 BWF World Superseries Tournament in Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium, Japan from September 20 to 25.
The $300,000 badminton event would be the first Superseries tournament after the recently concluded 2016 Rio Olympic Games. China's top men singles shuttlers would not be participating in the Tokyo-based badminton competition that includes the world No. 3 and two-time Olympic gold medalist Lin Dan and the newly crowned 2016 Summer Olympic Games champion Chen Long, who is the current No. 2 in the world rankings.

Denmark's elite badminton players Rio Games bronze medalist Viktor Axelsen (4th-ranked) and Jan Jorgensen (5th-ranked) would be taking part in the BWF event. Axelsen and Jorgensen would be the tourney's second and third seeded players, respectively.
Since China has decided to rest its two top men's singles players, the country would be sending its second-tier shuttlers such as Huang Yuxiang, Tian Houwei, Shi Yuqi, and Xue Song, in the men's singles event, and Sun Yu and He Bingjiao in women's singles to participate in the tournament, according to BadmintonPlanet.
Lee, who recently won his third consecutive Olympic silver medal in Rio last month, was handed the No. 1 seed in the tournament. He would play his opener against Thailand's Boonsak Ponsana.
Ponsana, 34, is the current world No. 28 and the 2006 Asian Badminton Championships finalist.
