Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to discuss India's Nuclear Supplier's Group (NSG) membership bid with ChinA's President Xi Jinping in a bilateral engagement on the sidelines of G20 Summit in China.

"This kind of high-level exchanges could inject great dynamism to our bilateral cooperation on many fronts. So in this context, we welcome very much the coming visit by Prime Minister Modi to China for the G20 meeting," China's Foreign Ministry said.

Modi would also discuss the contentious issue of India's bid for membership to the NSG with U.S. President Barack Obama during the two-day Summit. President Xi would also hold a separate meeting with Obama on the sidelines of the G20 Summit. China is hosting the G20 Summit for the first time. The two-day meeting of world leaders from world's top twenty economies is slated to begin on September 4 in Hangzhou.

The meeting between Xi and Modi comes amid growing tension between the two Asian powers. Beijing and New Delhi have been engaged in a bitter dispute over their shared Himalayan border. India's failed NSG membership bid has led to further deterioration of Sino-India ties in recent months.

India applied for NSG membership on May 12 this year with the support of the United States. China blocked New Delhi's bid to gain entry into the elite group at the NSG plenary meeting in South Korea's capital, Seoul in June on the ground that it is not a signatory to the Non-Proliferation Treaty.
