Rio Paralympic Games: Rwanda Loses to China in Women’s Sitting Volleyball Opener

The Rwanda national women's sitting volleyball team lost to the Chinese squad on Saturday in their Group B preliminary round opening match in the ongoing 15th edition of Paralympic Games at the Riocentro - Pavilion 6 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The Rwandan team, which was making the country's first ever appearance in the prestigious quadrennial sporting event, proved to be no match for the current world No. 1 and defending Paralympic champions. China easily won over the Rwandan team in three straight sets 25-3, 25-8, 25-6, according to The New Times.

With all the sets not going beyond the normal playing time of 15 minutes, the Chinese national side easily captured the opening set of the match with 26 points crushing the East Africans, who only managed to produce three points.

The Chinese team is gunning for the country's fourth-straight Paralympic title. The team pounded the Rwandans in the second set with 25-8.

The third set saw Rwanda managing to score only six points over China's 25.

Rwanda is the only African country to qualify for the event. The Rwandan team was drawn in Group B along with China, the United States, and Iran.

Meanwhile, in Group A, hosts Brazil got off to a good start after beating Canada in three straight sets 25-7, 25-12, 25-14 as Ukraine got the better of the Netherlands in an exciting five sets 21-25, 22-25, 25-13, 26-24,15-12 triumph.

The top two teams from each group would qualify for the semi-finals.
