Chinese actress Fan Bingbing's film "I am Not Madam Bovary" would open in the U.S. and Canada on Oct. 7. The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last week.

The North American rights to the movie have been brought by Well Go USA Entertainment. Describing "I am Not Madam Bovary" as a "powerful" and "innovative" film, Doris Pfardrescher, the CEO and president of Well Go USA Entertainment, said in a statement that the film features the "most acclaimed actress" from China and is directed by a "true master," Xiaogang Feng.

"This is a transformative role for Fan Bingbing and one which we think will translate with North American audiences," Pfardrescher added.

"I am Not Madam Bovary" is the feature adaptation of Liu Zhenyun's novel "I Did Not Kill My Husband."  Xiaogang Feng directed the move from a script written by Liu Zhenyun. This is the second time that Fan Bingbing has worked with Xiaogang Feng and screenwriter Liu Zhenyun. The actress starred in the director-screenwriter duo's "Cell Phone," a comedy released in 2003.

The new movie follows a village woman, played by Fan Bingbing, who is seeking revenge against her unfaithful husband. The actress told the press that she wants the audience to appreciate the film's title when they see it. Gulf News quoted her saying that the character of Madam Bovary is so iconic that the audiences will immediately recognize it.

Madam Bovary is the titular character of French writer Gustave Flaubert's novel of the same name. The story is about Emma Bovary who embarks on a series of adulterous affairs due to her dull, mundane provincial life.

The film also stars Guo Tao and Da Peng. Gua Tao hopes that the movie will be appreciated by the global audience, although it is very much Chinese.

"I am Not Madam Bovary" would be released in theaters across China on Sept. 30.
