After a 3-1 victory in the first leg of their series held at the Seoul World Cup Stadium in the South Korean capital city, FC Seoul has now defeated Shandong, 4-2 on aggregate, to advance to the final four of the said tourney against fellow Korea Republic club Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors.
Jeonbuk had beaten another CSL team, Shanghai SIPG FC, who was led by manager Sven-Göran Eriksson and Brazilian import Hulk, 5-0 on aggregate in their own last eight meeting.
Midfielder Walter Montillo was again the lone scorer for Shandong Luneng as the Argentine star netted the opening goal at the 59th minute of the match off an assist from midfielder Hao Junmin following a goalless first half for both squads.
Seoul netted the equalizer with eight minutes left before full time via a strike from forward Yun Ju-tae from a pass by Montenegrin striker Dejan Damjanović, who himself was a former China top flight player with Jiangsu Suning and Beijing Guoan from 2014 to 2015.
Xinhuanet indicated that head coach Felix Magath's Chinese side was "resolute in reversing the 3-1 deficit" they suffered in the first leg and "dominated the game throughout the first half" with former Southampton striker Graziano Pellè leading the attack for the hosts.
However, his header in the opening minutes was blocked by Seoul shot stopper Yu Sanghun while his teammate winger Zhang Chi's low strike struck the side of the net as Shandong remained scoreless.
Montillo had the chance to score the first goal with a penalty kick at the 41st minute, but his shot was wide.
