Tennis News: Ana Konjuh Advances to Second Round of Guangzhou Open 2016 in China

2016 U.S. Open quarterfinalist Ana Konjuh of Croatia continued her spectacular run of form with a two-straight set 6-2, 6-2 triumph over Tatjana Maria of Germany in the opening round of the ongoing Guangzhou International Women's Open on Monday in the capital of South China's Guangdong Province.

According to ESPN, Konjuh, 18, who secured an upset victory over the tourney's No. 4 seed Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland in New York, easily outplayed the 29-year-old German Maria.

The Croatian defeated her opponent in under one hour despite double-faulting seven times and converting on less than half of her first serves. The third-seeded Konjuh also beat Maria in the first round at the U.S. Open.

Konjuh, who is a native of Dubrovnik, won her very first singles title on the WTA Tour at the Nottingham Open last year. She was the youngest player to ever win a main tour event since the year 2006. Konjuh has also secured one title in the ITF Tour under her belt.

The tournament's fifth-seeded player Alison Riske of the United States also moved on to the next round of the competition with a 6-3, 6-3 victory against Xun Fangying of China. Danka Kovinic of Montenegro, who is the event's sixth-seed, got the better of the Chinese Wang Yafan 6-3, 6-4, the Associated Press reported.

The Guangzhou Open is one of China's oldest international professional women's tennis competitions. It was founded as a WTA International tournament in the year 2004.

The tournament boasts of a $225,000.00 prize money and secures participating winning competitor 280 points in the world rankings. The tennis matches are played on a hard surface. The competition has been featuring world class and top caliber tennis players for over a decade. It will run until September 24.
