China is planning to build the world's fastest high-speed trains that can carry passengers at a top speed of 500 km/h and cargo at 250 km/h.
The government plans to run the train on a hybrid-propulsion system that allows higher speed, Jia Limin, a professor at Beijing Jiaotong University, said. It also plans to install wheels that can adjust to various track gauges used across the globe.

In an interview in Hong Kong, Jia said that using such cutting-edge technology will give China the experience to run high-speed rail networks amid various geographic and climatic conditions.
Furthermore, the proposed high-speed tracks, which will be used to gain technological advantage over Europe, the United States, and Japan, will be capable of overcoming the high altitudes including that of in the mountainous Tibetan. It will also be designed to operate even at harsh weather conditions where temperatures can drop up to negative 40 degrees Farenheit, Next Shark reported.
"That gives Chinese technology the unique ability to adapt to any condition anywhere in the world," Jia said.
The planned expansion would extend the country's current network to 30,000 km by the end of the decade and 45,000 by 2030. Currently, domestic high-speed rails already cover 20,000 km, or 60 percent of the installed network in the world, South China Morning Post reported.
Aside from building it locally, China also wants to become the main builder of the next generation of railways. State-backed China Railway Rolling Stock Crop and other firms have allegedly already secured some deals in other countries including Indonesia, Russia, Thailand, and Turkey.
