Manchester United defender Matteo Darmian is reportedly set to go on a loan deal to Inter Milan in January as he has fallen in head coach Jose Mourinho's pecking order at the Old Trafford in the first few matches of the new season.

The Daily Mail reported that Darmian could be "on his way out of Manchester United" in January as he is "now behind youngster Timothy Fosu-Mensah in the Old Trafford pecking order."

The 26-year-old Italy international was one of United's big-name signings last summer when the team was still under the management of Dutch boss Louis van Gaal. He was a constant feature in van Gaal's starting XI, but new coach Mourinho has not used him at all this season.

Darmian has appeared only once in 14 games this term with the Portuguese mentor, as per Caught Offside, which was when he started in a 0-1 Europa League loss to Feyenoord on Sep. 15. He has not played any games in the Premier League after seven rounds so far.

The 6-foot full-back is currently linked to a move to Italy with Serie A club Inter Milan during the upcoming winter transfer window. The deal is said to be initially a season-long loan, which includes an option for the Nerazzurri to make it a permanent transfer at the end of the season.

Inter's interest in Darmian was well-documented in the summer as the team had submitted a bid to the Red Devils for the Italian forward during the recent transfer window. However, Old Trafford officials turned down the offer and he was left disgruntled on United's bench.

Darmian is reportedly interested in the move as well because he is keen on reclaiming the first-team time he was denied since Mourinho arrived at United.

Mourinho, who took charge as United's boss last May, is said to be unconvinced about Darmian because of his recent struggle with injuries.
