The mother and extended family of a seven year old Mexican boy whose eyes were gouged out with a spoon for refusing to take part in a Satanic ritual two years ago were sentenced to 30 years in prison.
According to witnesses in the town of Nezahualcoyotl, Mexico, in May 2012, Maria del Carmen Garcia Rios along with her sister, two brothers and parents, were chanting and performing a Satanic ritual that would protect the family from a deadly earthquake.

As they chanted in a circle for Satan to reveal himself, she told her son, then only five years old, to close his eyes out of respect.
When the boy repeatedly refused to follow because he was too scared to shut his eyes, she ordered the family to help her remove his eyes with a spoon in the kitchen.
Neighbors heard the screams coming from inside the house and began banging on the door to attempt to get in.
One woman was able to flag down a police patrol car that was passing by to alert them of the situation and officers forced their way into the home.
Benet Curiel, one of the officers who was at the scene, read from his notes as he testified during the trial that he saw the family of Satanists, scantily clad and huddled over the boy who was screaming. Two of the women in the kitchen, the boy's mother and his aunt, Lisbeth, were covered in his blood.
Curiel said they kept the family against the wall at gunpoint, away from the boy, as they called for an ambulance to rush him to the hospital.
One neighbor recalls that the family seemed very religious and devout, but no one had any idea that they were Satanists.
Two years after his traumatic ordeal, now 7-year-old Fernando Caleb Alvarado Rios is in specialist care and has received glass eyes.
