The new HBO series "Westworld" has been riding the hype train for quite some time already, with the series being tagged in the same breath as the epic political saga "Game of Thrones."

"Westworld" debuted this Sunday to much critical acclaim and from what critics have said so far regarding the series, it is off to a good start.

According to Tech Crunch, "Westworld" is based on a 1973 film of the same title. It was written and directed by Michael Crichton, well-known for the "Jurassic Park" acclaim.

The series takes place at a Western theme park inhabited by human-like robotic people called "hosts." They directly interact with human guests called "newcomers" who paid huge sums of money for their visit.

At first, the activities of the so-called newcomers are partly disturbing. However, as the plot gets deeper, the "Westworld" owners' personal hidden agenda will be revealed. The mysterious guest known only as Gunslinger, played by Ed Harris, will be introduced as well.

The new "Westworld" series was created by Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Nolan. Jonathan is best known for his works together with his brother Christopher, who both created the "Dark Knight" trilogy and the sci-fi drama "Person of Interest."

"Westworld" has a diverse group of cast members, ranging from well-known veterans to newcomers. Headlining the cast is Evan Rachel Wood who plays Dolores Abernathy, one of the many hosts in the theme park. Seasoned actor Anthony Hopkins portrays the role of Dr. Robert Ford, the creative director of Westworld.
