The Philippines has decided to halt joint naval patrols and military exercises with the United States military in the disputed South China Sea.
Country's defense secretary Delfin Lorenzana said on Friday that the country has conveyed to the American military its decision to stop the joint undertaking in the highly-contested waters.

Lorenzana also said the Philippines wanted to reduce its dependence on the US, particularly in military aid, as he hinted that they could live without it.
"Our Congress is actually giving us money now for the procurement of equipment. I believe they will give us more if we don't have a source of other funds," the official said during an interview with the media in Manila.
Earlier, President Rodrigo Duterte, who is known for his anti-US tirade, had asked the North American capital and European Union to withdraw their financial aid to the Philippines if they continue to oppose his war against illegal drugs.
"I do not expect US President Barack Obama, I do not expect the EU to understand me. Do not understand me and if you think it's high time for you guys to withdraw your assistance, go ahead," he said on Thursday. "We will not beg for it."
Washington said, on the other hand, that it will continue to support Manila financially and even committed to provide $180 million aid.
"We continue to focus on our broad relationship with the Philippines and we'll work together in the many areas of mutual interest," State Department spokesperson John Kirby said on Friday.
