Murray currently has a total of 9,845 ranking points. He is just 3,695 points behind Djokovic, who has 13,540 ranking points.
"It's very positive leading into Shanghai, and hopefully I can finish the year strong," he said in Beijing, who aiming to become the very first British man to reach number one.
At the Shanghai Rolex Masters, Murray has been handed the second top seed in the tournament. He will face Steve Johnson of the United States in the second round of the competition after obtaining a bye into the second round of the event.
