Samsung Electronics Co. is recalling around 191,000 Galaxy Note 7 smartphones across mainland China, the country's product regulator said on Tuesday.

The South Korean giant will call back a total of 190,984 units in China, including the 1,858 devices it initially recalled on Sept. 14, the South China Morning Post reported citing a statement by the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection, and Quarantine.

While Samsung initially assured customers that the Galaxy Note 7s sold in China used a different battery and were safe, as many as 20 cases of "overheating battery or fire-related accidents" prompted the recall, Quartz noted.

All affected consumers could ask either for a full refund or for a unit replacement. Clients who will opt for the latter will receive a refund of the price difference between the units plus a 300 yuan ($45) voucher, according to the ABC News.

Samsung's unit in China also said on Monday it has halted the production and sale of Galaxy Note 7. And on Tuesday, Samsung said it will discontinue all manufacturing of the devices.

Meanwhile, the notice is also applicable to Samsung's customers in Hong Kong and Macau, South China Morning Post reported.

To date, the Hong Kong Customer Council has reportedly received around 160 complaints of the Note 7 catching fire or exploding. Samsung traders from Sin Tat Plaza said that although the stop of sales came unexpected, consumers have already lost their interest.

Even large retailers like Fortress and Broadway in Mong Kok have removed also already removed Galaxy Note 7 posters and stopped selling the devices.

China accounts for about 8 percent of Galaxy Note 7 units sold globally. The most recent crisis will slow down Samsung's effort to speed up its growth in the world's largest smartphone market. The global recall would cost Samsung an estimated $630 million in foregone sales.
