"Running Man" announced Tuesday that the 38-year-old rapper will be filming his last episode on Oct. 31. Gary had hinted earlier this year that he would be leaving the variety show, as he wants to devote more time to his music career, and also, he plans to study.
"Running Man," which premiered in 2010, is not only popular in South Korea, but it also has a huge fan base in China and other Southeast Asian countries.
Gary is breaking the cord with the show after appearing on it for six years. He joined it in July 2010 as one of the original cast members.
"We sincerely thank Gary for putting everything into the show for [six] years, as one of the original members of 'Running Man.' Gary wishes to focus on his career as a musician, and we wish him the best," a production staff of "Running Man" was quoted as saying by Soompi.
Gary formed a hit reel-life pair with cast member Song Ji Hyo, who first appeared as a guest on "Running Man," and their official love-line kept the rumors swirling that they were a real-life couple as well. Fans called them the Monday couple and wished that they hook up in real life, too.
Song Ji Hyo, who is starring in JBTC's new drama "My Wife is Having an Affair This Week," told the press that the Monday couple has been over for some time, and she would like fans to think of it as a memory.
"We've said this on broadcasts before; Monday Couple has been over," the actress was quoted as saying by Soompi. "I would like for [viewers] to think of it as a memory."
Speaking of Gary's decision to quit "Running Man," Song Ji Hyo, the remaining half of the Monday couple, said, "I'm in no place to say anything about it, but I support him as a colleague."
