Chinese superstar Zhang Shuai will be challenging the top tennis players in the world in the upcoming WTA Elite Trophy Zhuhai, the organization's year-ending Tour Championship event, in the city of Guangdong in China.

Zhang, 27, has enjoyed a career-best season this year reaching the quarterfinal round of the Australian Open in January.

The Chinese tennis ace ended her 14 grand slam losing streak and registered a sensational victory against then world No. 2 Simona Halep of Romania in the Melbourne-based majors.

The Chinese tennis ace kept her good form en route to capturing her first career main-draw singles victory at the US Open, her 10th appearance from the tournament, in New York last August.

The Tianjin-native climb up in the world rankings and currently holds the No. 28th spot, making her as China's highest-ranked women's singles player in the world.

"I'm so happy to see myself be competitive in major tournaments and to have many opportunities to challenge and defeat the world's top 20 and even the top 10," Zhang, who was handed a wildcard entry at Zhuhai, told China Daily.

She will be facing world No. 11 Carla Suarez Navarro of Spain and No.18 Timea Bacsinszky of Switzerland in the tourney's round-robin group stage. Zhang has played both players in the past three months.

With an advantage of playing in her own country, Zhang has an opportunity to make it to the competition's final four. She had beaten the 27-year-old Bacsinszky at the Rio Olympic Games and pushed the Barcelona-based Suarez Navarro to the limit in their most recent match.

The WTA Elite Trophy is on its second edition.

According to the official website of the WTA, it offers 700 ranking points to the emerging champion of the event and has total prize money of US$2.5 million. It will be featuring top caliber players ranked between No. 9 and No. 20, along with one wildcard.
