According to the latest TOP 500 Supercomputer Ranking, Germany holds the second spot behind China and the US. The third spot is held by Japan, followed by France and the United Kingdom. The United States holds 33.9 percent of Linpack performance while China has 33.3 percent.
China has reported 10 suprcomputers in November 2015, while United States had 200. In June, China went past the United States for the first time with 167 systems. The US had 165 systems at that time.
TaihuLight took the top supercomputer position in June this year. The supercomputer is entirely built using processors, which were designed and made in China. Its predecessor Tianhe-2 had held the top spot for nearly three years. TaihuLight is installed at the National Supercomputing Center in Wuxi.
Intel is the top vendor for the supercomputer chips. The company's chips are incorporated in 462 supercomputers out of the top 500 list. Hewlett Packard Enterprise is the top supercomputer manufacturer with 112 supercomputers.
China's Lenovo holds the second spot with 92 systems. Other Chinese companies included in the list are Sugon at the fourth spot, Inspur at the eighth, and Huawei at no. 9. Jack Dongarra, professor of the University of Tennessee and editor of the list, told Xinhua, "Chinese manufactures like Lenovo and Huawei are doing well globally."
