Vin Scully, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Michael Jordan to Receive Presidential Medal of Freedom

Three sports icons are among the recently selected individuals who were chosen to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Barack Obama. Hall of Fame baseball broadcaster Vin Scully, and NBA superstars Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Michael Jordan will receive the honor at a White House ceremony on Tuesday.

The Presidential Medal of Freedom is the highest honor the United States can bestow to a civilian. The award is given to select individuals who made significant cultural or security contributions to the United States.
Scully, who retired in October, spent 67 seasons with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Scully worked as a radio and television broadcaster. His last broadcast was on Oct. 2, during the final regular season game of the Dodgers, according to ESPN.
Before joining the NBA, Abdul-Jabbar won three NCAA championship titles while playing for UCLA. During his NBA career, he won six NBA championship titles. He won five while playing for the Los Angeles Lakers and one while playing for the Milwaukee Bucks. Abdul-Jabbar is well-known for his trademark "skyhook" shot.
Jordan is considered as one of the most important figures in the history of the NBA. He won six NBA championship titles while playing for the Chicago Bulls. In his 15 seasons in the NBA, he won five Most Valuable Player awards and also making it to the NBA All-Star 14 times.
President Obama will be awarding 21 people for his last batch of Medal of Freedom awardees. The list include music icons like Bruce Springsteen and Diana Ross, according to The Guardian. Actors Robert De Niro, Tom Hanks, and Robert Redford are also slated to receive the award.
