The United States Men's National Soccer Team suffered its worst defeat in 36 years after it was beaten by Costa Rica 4-0 on Tuesday. Jurgen Klinsmann calls the trashing "the defeat that hurts most" in his five-year tenure as USA manager.
The last time the USA squad lost a match by a margin of four goals was in November 1980 against Mexico with a score of 5-1. The recent defeat from Costa Rica pushes the USA squad into the bottom of the six-country qualifying group bested by the likes of Trinidad & Tobago and Panama. Only the top three teams will qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup tournament in Russia.

According to ESPN, midfielder Johan Venegas scored the opening goal in the 43rd minute. Cristian Bolaños scored the second goal of the night in the 69th minute. Second-half substitute Joel Campbell beats U.S. goalkeeper Brad Guzan twice in the 74th and 77th minutes essentially sealing the deal for Costa Rica.
Although Costa Rica played a magnificent offense, sport, s analysts pointed out that some serious defensive lapses on the side of the U.S. Costa Rica may have pieced together this puzzle as the squad sustained its relentless attacks throughout the match. It also helped that the match was played in Estadio Nacional, Costa Rica's home turf.
The possibility of clinching a slot for the 2018 FIFA World Cup Finals is looking bleak for the U.S. squad. The recent defeat also casted some doubt regarding Klinsmann's future as the manager of the squad.
In a statement acquired by BBC, U.S. captain Michael Bradley said, "At moments like this it does you no good to point fingers and to be looking around trying to figure out who you can throw under the bus."
