Beijing Tightens Foreign Employment, Issues New Set of Requirements

Foreigners are now required to meet a new set of employment standards for an eligibility to work in Beijing.

The municipal government in Beijing has issued the new decree on Sunday to tighten the requirements before hiring foreigners to work in the capital city. This was according to a report from The Beijing News on Monday.

The decree was a jointly released by Beijing Municipal Commission of Education and the Beijing Human Resources and Social Security Bureau. The purpose of the new set of standards was to improve the entry of foreign workers who seek employment in China.

According to the decree, a foreigner wishing to work in Beijing should be between 18 to 60 years old. A bachelor’s degree or higher is also required. Furthermore, related work experience of at least 2 years has been stated in the new requirement.

Meanwhile, foreigners who do not possess diplomas and wish to employ in technology research must be qualified with foreign technical skills. Foreign language teachers who seek to work in Beijing must possess a Chinese teacher certificate or an International language teaching certification including The Teaching Knowledge Test (TKT), Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) or Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL).

Foreigners who want to teach other subjects aside from language must have related work experience of at least 5 years. Prospective foreign workers should be physically fit and free from any criminal record. A valid passport is necessary along with other travel documents. Furthermore, a work permit should be secured after issuance from the Chinese human resources and social security authorities. A residence certificate is also a must.

According to a report from People Daily, around 37,000 foreigners are working permanently in Beijing. These nationals mainly come from Australia, Germany, the United States and South Korea and work in the capital city in computer, information technology, business consultation and education industries.
