Badminton's Spanish world No. 1 Carolina Marin failed to move through the final four of the ongoing BWF Thaihot China Open after losing to the fifth-seeded Tai Tzu Ying of Chinese Taipei in their women's singles quarterfinal showdown at the Haixia Olympic Sports Center in Fuzhou on Friday.

According to the official website of the BWF, the reigning Summer Olympic Games champion surrendered to a 10-21, 20-22 straight-set defeat against the current world No. 5 Chinese Taipei shuttler. It was Marin's second loss against Tai in their five official matchups since 2014, wherein the Spanish badminton star yielded to the same player in the same World Superseries tournament two years ago.

Tai wrapped up the match and sealed the victory in just 36 minutes. She will be facing the tourney's eighth-seeded and current world No. 9 Chinese player Sun Yu, who ousted the 22-year-old Line Kjaersfeldt of Denmark in two sets, according to Fox Sports.

Marin, who entered the USD 700,000 badminton event as the top seeded player of the women's singles event, had a magnificent start of the tournament. The two-time world champion eliminated Ji Shuting of China in their opening round showdown before sending Sayaka Sato of Japan packing after beating the Japanese player in second round with another straight-set victory.

With the loss, Marin's quest to claim her maiden China Open title had come to an end, at least for this season.

Prior to the China Open event, the 23-year-old native of Huelva, Spain, had an unwelcome injury in her thighs and suffered from gastroenteritis that evidently affected her run at the last Denmark Open. The injury caused Marin to lose in the semifinal stage of the tournament against the Japanese shuttler Akane Yamaguchi in three sets.

Marin was also forced to pull out from competing in the recently concluded French Open last month because of the same injury.
