Along with prostitution, solicitation is also illegal in the country. Authorities have been in hot pursuit following Chinese president Xi Jinping’s order to combat corruption. Xi has seen corruption and other related issues a posing threat to the Communist Party.
Wang was awarded the Golden Bear in 2006 at the Berlin Film Festival for his movie Tuya’s Wedding. He also took home the same award in 2012 for his historic-set drama, White Deer Plain.
Wang followed the likes of other Chinese celebrities who were apprehended by authorities following the widening crackdown to uphold morality in the entertainment sector in China.
Taiwanese actor Ko Chen-tung along with Jackie Chan’s son, Jaycee Chan, were caught smoking marijuana in Beijing.
The entertainment industry in China has been supporting the government’s effort to crackdown corruption, prostitution, solicitation and drug use in the country. After the arrest of several celebrities, TV firms along with film companies pledged not hire actors and actresses who were involved in any illegal actions.
A statement was released through the verified account of the Beijing police department on microblogging site Sina Weibo. The post said that a man surnamed Wang was arrested in an apartment in Dongcheng district. The post also referred to the man as a filmmaker from the province of Shaanxi who was caught with a prostitute in Beijing on September 10.
Multiple media reports confirmed that the man referred to on the police department’s post was indeed director Wang Quan’an.
The 48 year old filmmaker was caught with a 31 year old prostitute around 7 PM on Wednesday, according to authorities. Wang admitted he engaged in hiring the prostitute through making phone calls. The Golden Bear awardee also admitted paying the sex worker 800 yuan.
Six other people who were involved along with an 18 year old pimp were arrested.
