According to the tournament results in the official website of the BWF, the 20-year-old unheralded Chinese badminton ace scored a straight-set, 21-11, 21-19 win over the current world no. 8 Chou, who is the top favorite to win the crown considering that Zhao is just presently at the 125th spot in the latest world rankings.
Zhao, who entered the final round after securing his hard-earned victory against Chou's compatriot Tzu Wei Wang in a hard-fought semifinals battle, only needed 38 minutes to wrap up the match and bring home the bacon.
With the win, Zhao claimed his first title of the season after falling short in conquering the China International Challenge 2016 last January following his lost to fellow Chinese player Lin Guipu in two sets in the championship round of the tournament.
Meanwhile, China's Chen Yufei defeated her compatriot Chen Xiaoxin in two sets to claim the title in the women's singles category, basing from the report of Inside the Game. The winning badminton player registered a spectacular 21-13, 21-18 victory over her opponent that only lasted for 47 minutes, winning the title without dropping a single set during the entire competition.
Chen Yufei is currently ranked no. 21 in the world, and the USD 120,000 Grand Prix Gold event is the second title that the Chinese youngster had won this season. She was the winner in the last SCG Badminton Asia Junior Championships 2016 (individual event), where she got the better of Gregoria Mariska of Indonesia in the finals with a straight-game victory.
There was further success for China in the other events, with the pair of Zhang Nan and Li Yinhui triumphing in the finals of the mixed doubles and the tandem of Chen Qingchen and Jia Yifan bagging the title in the women's doubles.
