New Taxi App Aims to Help Women Locate Female Taxi Drivers

(Photo : REUTERS) Only 3% of the total number of taxi drivers in New York City are females, figures suggest.

SheTaxi, an app used for locating taxis driven by women, was slated to be launched last Monday in New York City but was delayed as the company seeks out more women cab drivers for its users.

The app, which was created and designed by Stella Mateo, aims to provide women with taxis driven by female drivers in the areas of New York City, Westchester County, and Long Island.

Mateo cancelled the launch because she thinks that having more lady drivers registered in the app would make it more useful and feasible. She noted that she needs at least 500 drivers to sign up for the app.

As of today, there are over 100 female drivers who have signed up with the app and they have been instructed to wear pink scarves in order to make them easily identifiable.

During a news conference Monday, Mateo stated that it would be great for women to have the choice of being driven exclusively by female drivers.

Mateo is the wife of Fernando Mateo, the founder of the group 'New York State Federation of Taxi Drivers'.

SheTaxi has been in the works for two years and, according to the creator, once it is available for use it will first be used by iPhone users and will eventually expand to Android users. They also have plans to have the app made available to other areas.

According to reports, only three percent of almost 115,000 licensed taxi and limousine drivers are women. Sources also confirmed that many women are reluctant to get into cabs alone when they are driven by male drivers.

Furthermore, women from certain strict religious communities such as Orthodox Jews and Muslims are sometimes restricted to interacting only with other women, making female cab drivers a distinct necessity.
