A 6.2 magnitude earthquake hit China's far western region of Xinjiang on Thursday afternoon, according to the China Earthquake Administration.

The South China Morning Post reported that the quake hit Changji's Hutubi county in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region at 1.15 p.m. (local time). Although there were no reports of damage or casualties, Reuters reported that buildings near the epicenter, which is around 100 km (60 km) west of Urumqi, were shaken by tremor.

Pictures posted across social media showed goods from stores falling off, while victims were being evacuated to safety.

The epicenter, with a reported depth of 6 km, was detected 43.83 degrees north latitude and 86.35 degrees east longitude, China Earthquake Center reported.

The US Geological Survey initially measured the quake at magnitude 6.1 and at a depth of 55 km.
