A Colorado man takes legal action after losing five of his toes to diabetes while he was imprisoned at the Arapahoe County jail.

James Neisler, who was arrested for misdemeanor charges linked to driving while under the influence of alcohol and domestic abuse in 2012, accused the Correctional Healthcare Companies for failing to provide him necessary medical treatment while he was incarcerated.

Since his legs began swelling upon his imprisonment due to his diabetes, he was advised by a jail nurse not to stand for more than two hours.

However, according to his lawsuit, Neisler was ordered to carry heavy sacks of flour and other kitchen commodities while wearing ill-fitting steel-toed shoes for about four hours.

After several days, his toes began to blister then turned into gangrene.

He complained about his toe, which eventually bled due to severe swelling, to jail officials who purportedly ignored his medical plea.

Two days after, he wrote a second letter of appeal describing his toe's situation which he described to be "literally rotting" and had begged for jail authorities to take him to a medical facility for treatment.

After receiving yet another silent treatment, the imprisoned diabetic hid his bloody socks under his mattress which he collected as evidence of his struggle.

When the jail nurse finally checked his foot, all five toes on his right foot have already gone "past gangrene, all the way to bone infection" and the tissue had been dubbed necrotic.

By August 22, he was taken to the hospital where his right toes had to be removed.

During an interview with the Denver Post, the 47-year-old former stockbroker even joked that he could "write 25 country songs about what happened."

"I go into jail with 10 toes and I come out with five," he added saying he had to laugh or else he'd "be crying all the time."
