The swelling trend of diabetes is a foremost concern for China as close to 100 million people have been diagnosed with diabetes, which is highest in the world as per the data released by International diabetes federation (IDF). According to IDF, the number of diabetes cases has increased rapidly in recent years and is projected to reach 151 million by 2040 in the country. There are almost 500 million more people, suffer from so-called “prediabetes”—a stage where blood sugar levels are high, but not high enough to trigger a diagnosis—indicating what the IDF calls “the enormity of diabetes as a public health problem in China”. A study by IDF also says that 13% of medical expenditures in China are directly caused by diabetes.

Mengke Bateer, the first Chinese player to start in an NBA game and to win a title, has retired due to health issues, mainly diabetes. Bateer, who is from Inner Mongolia, joined the NBA's Denver Nuggets in 2002 after a five-year stint with the Beijing Ducks. It was also wth the Nuggets that Bateer became the as the first Chinese player to start in an NBA game, according to the website Complex. In that game, Bateer scored four points on a 28 percent shooting.
