Barcelona striker Luis Suárez will soon sign a six-year contract extension with the La Liga champions, according to club president Josep Bartomeu.

Suárez, 29, has been one of the best goalscorers in European football even since his time with English Premier League club Liverpool.

The Uruguayan forward was acquired by Barcelona in the summer of 2014 for a transfer fee of $81 million and has teamed up perfectly well with superstars Lionel Messi and Neymar to form manager Luis Enrique's three-headed attacking force.

A goal-scoring machine, he has scored 96 times in a total of 115 appearances in all competitions in two-and-a-half seasons with Barcelona. Last season, he netted an astonishing 59 goals in 53 games to capture the European Golden Shoe award for the second time in his career.

Suárez's extension talks came only two months after Brazilian sensation Neymar signed his own extension with Barça and all indicators suggest that the Uruguayan is next in line with Messi following soon, as per the Independent.

"Suárez is going to get a renewed contract very soon, it's done, just a few small details need to be sorted and we'll announce it in the next few days or weeks," said Bartomeu during a radio interview.

"It will be a great Christmas present, not necessarily for Luis as he already knows he's going to continue here, but for football fans," the Barça president said.

Bartomeu also said that the club intends to give Suárez a longer contract, but for the meantime, the deal will stand at six years, until 2022, which is the longest that can be given to a player according to regulations, according to Daily Mail Online.

Bartomeu added that Suárez is "an important character" in Enrique's system and that his role as one of the team's "spectacular trident" of attackers with Messi and Neymar "helps the entire team function" at the highest level.

"We want Luis Suárez to be at this club for many years. And when he retires he will always be welcome at Barcelona," the club president ended.
