South Korean badminton ace Son Wan Ho scored a huge victory against the reigning BWF men's singles world no. 1 Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia in the opening day of the USD 1 million 2016 BWF World Superseries Finals being held at the Hamdan Sports Complex in the modern city of Dubai in United Arab Emirates on Wednesday.

Son, who currently ranks sixth in the world, registered an impressive straight-set 21-10, 21-16 win over the Malaysian badminton icon, who seemingly was a little bit rusty after having a lengthy breather from the competition due to the hamstring injury he sustained while competing in the last Denmark Open in October.

According to the official website of the BWF, Son wrapped up the victory in just 38 minutes and claimed his second triumph over Lee after 12 attempts since 2010. The other recorded occasion wherein the 28-year-old South Korean shuttler prevailed over the three-time Olympic Games silver medalist was at the 2012 Yonex Sunrise India Open.

"I have lost many times to him," Son said after the match.

"I tried to learn from my past losses. I tried to relax and get into my rhythm. My confidence grew once I got a lead early in the match. Maybe he wasn't in his best condition, but this win will help my confidence for the rest of the tournament,"  he continued.

Denmark's Viktor Axelsen will be Son's next game assignment.  According to Fox Sports, the 22-year-old Dane defeated Ng Ka Long Angus of Hong Kong, China with a straight-game 21-13, 21-17 victory.

Lee, on the other hand, will face Ng and will have to win all of the last two matches in the group phase to be able to qualify for the next level of the prestigious badminton event and for the 2016 BWF Best Male Player of the Year award to keep his chances of claiming his fifth World Superseries Finals title alive.
