Mariah Carey has been trending for hours now after suffering a lip sync disaster during her performance at "Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve with Ryan Seacrest" show at the New York Times Square last Saturday. So, what really happened?

First of all, here's what we know. The veteran singing diva was the biggest star headlining the annual New Year's Eve show and everyone was pretty confident that she'd do an amazing job. After all, she's done live performances a million times by now.

Come performance night, just moments before the ball dropped, she entered the stage looking phenomenal in a nude, cleavage-baring almost-transparent outfit and wowed the crowd and the 1 million live television viewers from all over the world. However, it was quite noticeable how her performance was shaky from the start. She seemed to be having a problem with her earpiece, judging from the way that she couldn't sync with the lyrics and music of the traditional New Year's song, Auld Lang Syne.

By the time her hit song Emotions came on, she appeared to have given up and allowed the recording to play, confirming that she had been lip syncing all along and made comments like "We didn't have a [sound] check for this song, so let's just say, it went to number one." She even begged, "Turn on the monitors, please," and "I'm trying to be a good sport here."

The same pretty much happened when another one of her hits, We Belong Together, came on and she alternated between lip syncing phrases and explaining herself, but it was still incredibly awkward for everyone.

Sources revealed, however, that she did rehearse thoroughly for three hours the night before and rehearsed again at 3 p.m. (ET) on New Year's Eve with "no sound issues."

So what really happened? TMZ went as far as reporting that the show's producers had "set her up to fail" and sabotaged her performance on purpose. Dick Clark Productions, however, has slammed the accusations and called it "silly."

Her manager, Stella Bulocknikov, pressed that the producers had known about the technical problems but did not do anything to fix it for the sake of ratings. Bulocknikov told US Weekly that they "told them three times that her mike pack was not working" and that the singer actually "did them a favor" by not making a scene or suing them.

A statement from the production group noted that, "In very rare instances, there are of course technical errors that can occur with live television" and that they "had no involvement in the challenges associated with Ms. Carey's New Year's Eve performance."

A veteran audio producer from the Maryland Sound International, a company that has worked on the annual Times Square event for many years, said in an email that there were actually no equipment malfunctions that night.

"Every monitor and in-ear device worked perfectly. I can't comment beyond that and don't know what her nontechnical issue may have been," Robert Goldstein, Maryland Sound International's owner, defended.

Whatever happened that night, Carey's spokesperson and manager made clear that it was not the singer's fault. "Unfortunately there was nothing she could do to continue with the performance given the circumstances," Nicole Perna told The Associated Press.

Perhaps it really was the most fitting way to wrap up 2016, arguably the worst year for celebrities.
