Chinese Basketball Association: Guangdong Southern Tigers Hand Shanghai Sharks’ Third Loss of the Season

After a disappointing game performance in the previous round, the Guangdong Southern Tigers immediately bounced back and handed the third lost of the league leading team Shanghai Sharks of the season on Sunday night.

The Southern Tigers defeated the Sharks with a 116-107 victory in the 24th round of the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) on the first day of the new calendar year 2017 and straightaway return back to the winning column after falling short against Liaoning Flying Leopards last Friday.

According to EuroBasket, Chinese forward Peng Zhou had a team-high 30 points including four three-pointers to lead the Southern Tigers to victory. The 27-year-old CBA All-Star went 6-10 from the two-point range and made 6-9 from the foul line while playing for 42 minutes.

Guangdong's foreign basketball reinforcements also have significant contributions in the team's victory. Donald Sloan finished the game with 26 markers, while Carlos Boozer recorded another double-double game performance of 22 points and 10 rebounds.

With the victory, the Southern Tigers remained to be the league's second-best ballclub with a 20-4 win-loss record.  Shanghai, which was paced by former NBA journeyman Jimmer Fredette with game-high 35 points, continued to be CBA's regular season top-notch team with an impressive 21-3 win-loss card.

The Southern Tigers, which is the sixth-best rebounding team in the league, dominated the boards with a 45-33 advantage and forced the opposing side to commit 17 turnovers during the game.

Basing from the match result in the website of NowGoal, the winners ended the first 24 minutes with a slim two-point lead, 44-42. In the third frame of the game, the Southern Tigers put on a 36-29 run to further extend their lead to seven points, 80-71, entering the final period of the match.

Guangdong managed to control the game in its last 12 minutes and limit the offensive attacks of the Sharks to seal the win.

The Southern Tigers will be facing Fujian Sturgeons, while the Sharks will play against Shenzhen Leopards on Wednesday.
