A convicted murderer in Southern Indiana admitted to killing his girlfriend and then cooking and eating her brains and other organs before the gruesome scene was discoverd by police.

Joseph Albert Oberhansley, 33, was charged with breaking and entering, murder, and abuse of a corpse. He is being held without bond as he awaits trial.

The case left the town of Jeffersonville shocked when they learned of the details on how Oberhansley stabbed his ex-girlfriend, 46-year-old Tammy Jo Blanton, then cooked her brains, as well as cannibalized her lungs and heart.

Blanton's body was found by police in the bathtub in her home, covered by a vinyl camping tent. Her skull was crushed and she had multiple wounds all over her torso and neck. A plate with utensils was found with her blood and bones. Other bodily tissues were reportedly also found in a garbage can outside of her home.

The state prosecutor assigned to the case said he had never seen anything like it in his 25 years of being in office.

The case is so disturbing that several news agencies refused to air the affidavit filed by Jeffersonville police against Oberhansley in Clark County Circuit Court due to the extremely graphic content of the allegations.

Prior to his arrest over Blanton's murder, Oberhansley was convicted of manslaughter in Utah for the death of another ex-girlfriend in 1998.

According to the Courier Journal, he shot 17-year-old Sabrina Elder, who had just given birth to their baby boy, before he attempted to kill himself as well.

He was released from prison in 2012.  After he was released, he was charged with putting a man in a choke-hold during a fight and was involved in a cross-border police car chase for which Blaton had posted bail for him.

Oberhansley is being held without bail and prosecutors have confirmed that they will be seeking the death penalty.
