A Daily Dose of Coffee Prolongs Life, Study Reveals

A new study found that a cup of coffee every day could help prolong life, as the caffeine content counteracts any inflammation due to aging.

Researchers from Stanford University said that chronic inflammation, which is common to some older people, might eventually trigger cardiovascular problems. However, one of the solutions to prevent such is a daily dose of coffee.

Scientists said that there is something essential that connects coffee consumption to systematic inflammation, aging, and cardiovascular diseases. Mark Davis, Microbiology and Immunology Professor at Stanford University and co-author of the study, told Live Science that this explains why people who love drinking coffee tend to live longer compared with those who do not.

The study is called Stanford-Ellison cohort, which actually aims to examine how the human body system develops or changes during aging. To carry out the experiment, researchers gather and study data of more than 100 participants. They obtained blood samples and conducted survey on the patients, taking into consideration their family background, history, and medical conditions.

Results reveal that older people have higher levels of IL-1-beta or what commonly known as inflammatory protein. This make them more at risk for stiffening of the arteries, thus resulting to conditions like high blood pressure.

Researchers also found that of the participants who said they consumed caffeinated beverages like coffee, results showed that they tend to have lower activation rate of inflammation-causing genes or the IL-1-beta.

Researchers also reviewed their blood samples to confirm. They added caffeine to the human immune cells that grow in lab dishes together with the compounds that help trigger inflammation. The result found that caffeine primarily from coffee consumption helps prevent compounds to cause inflammation.

“Our findings show that an underlying inflammatory process, which is associated with aging, is not only driving cardiovascular disease but is, in turn, driven by molecular events that we may be able to target and combat,” Davis said.
