Amesh A. Adalja,M.D., Assistant Professor University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and board-certified infectious disease specialist, said, “When we see a flu season dominated by H3N2, it tends to be more severe,” adding that she has witnessed more flu hospitalizations as well as deaths, which is alarming.

She explained that such condition happens because this flu season influenza A, also known as H3N2, dominates and it is a more serious or worse type of a flu, Self reported.

The CDC said that influenza viruses have four types: A, B, C, and D. The A and B viruses are seasonal epidemics in United States, while influenza C primarily causes mild respiratory illness. On the other hand, influenza type D virus do not infect people but affect cattle instead.

Dr. Brandon Bloxham, Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center, said, "If you are exposed to someone who has influenza make sure to frequently wash your hands.” Using hand sanitizer and other things that sterilize your hands is recommended to avoid contamination.
