Tennis: China’s Peng Shuai and Czech Republic‘s Andrea Hlavackova Advance to the Australian Open Women’s Doubles Semis

The tennis combination of Chinese Peng Shuai and Andrea Hlavackova of the Czech Republic past through their quarterfinal round battle against the event's third seeded pair of Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina with a hard-earned 7-5, 7-6 (7-5) victory in the 2017 Australian Open on Tuesday.

According to the official website of the prestigious Grand Slam event, the winning tennis pair needed an hour and 55 minutes to complete the quarterfinal match and secured their ticket for the semifinal round. Peng and Hlavackova will be facing the winner between the home crowd favorite pairing of Ashleigh Barty and Casey Dellacqua of Austarlia and top-seeded French duo Caroline Garcia and Kristinal Mladenovic in the semis.

The Chinese-Czech combo entered the quarterfinal round of the women's doubles after a convincing straight-sets win over the tandem of Slovenian Andreja Klepac and Spain's Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez 6-2, 6-0.

The winning tandem scored two aces during the match and committed just14 unforced errors compared to the opposing pair's 26. Peng and Hlavackova, who are the tournament's 12th seeds garnered a total points won of 91 while Makarova and Vesnina just had 79.

According to the WTA's official website the pair are playing their sixth event together since 2014 and have won three titles, including the Shenzhen Open to start the season. The Melbourne-based tennis event was the duo's first major tournament as a team.

Meanwhile, China's Xu Yifan and her partner Raquel Atawo of the United States failed to further extend their winning run as they yielded to the second seeded pairing of American Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic in their respective quarterfinal match.

Mattek-Sands and Sarafova scored a convincing straight-set triumph of 6-1, 6-1 over the 11th seeded pair that only lasted for 53 minutes. They will be facing the Japanese duo of Eri Hozumi and Miyu Kato, who defeated Mirjana Lucic-Baroni of Croatia and Germany's Andrea Petkovic.
