Nokia announced Thursday that out of 62 of the vehicles that debuted at the Paris Motor Show, 50 use the company's "Here" navigation technology.

The number includes both commercially available cars as well as concept cars that car makers strut out without necessarily bringing the models to market. The figure doesn't include vehicles that have no in-dash navigation capabilities.

Stemming from the firm's acquisition of electronic map maker Navteq, Nokia Here plays a crucial role in the company's future after Nokia sold its mobile devices department to Microsoft. The Here technology includes apps for Android, Firefox OS, iOS and Windows Phone devices, as well as maps of several countries.

Here, however, faces serious challenges from Google Maps, among others. Although it isn't common in cars as is Here, Google Maps is still used by many to navigate using their smartphones.

Google has gradually expanded the capabilities of Maps by adding building interior schematics, Street View and pictures taken by legions of people who've uploaded them to Google services.

The Finnish company has shown some progress popularizing Here as its device was on 3.3 million vehicles in the second quarter, up from the previous year's 2.7 million. Sales, however, only amounted to US$293 million while no operating profit was made.

In the car industry, Nokia's Here customers include Diamler, BMW, Ford, Fiat-Chrysler, Honda, General Motors, Nissan, Jaguar Land Rover, Renault, Peugeot, Volvo and Volkswagen.

Meanwhile, Volkswagen, Daimler and Google, are busy toiling away on their driverless car projects and have received permits from California to test drive their vehicles within the state.

The issuance comes in the wake of news that any trial in the state needs to have a permit starting Sept. 16.
