Kickstarter video games project shrink by 50 percent year-on-year

Indie studios have been looking for routes to get away from publishers and in the last two years Kickstarter has become an optimal solution, providing indie studios with an influx of cash to create their game without rules and restrictions.
After three years of Kickstarter, it looks like gamers are fed up with the crowdfunding experience, that and indie developers seem to have moved on. Data provided by consultancy firm ICO Partners shows a clear 50 percent dip in revenue from video games on Kickstarter.

Last year, $57 million was raised on Kickstarter for video games, this year only $13.5 million has been funded and ICO projects a grand total of $27 million in 2014. The amount of successful campaigns drops more than half year-on-year, 446 last year and 175 this year.
Only three Kickstarters in the video games section were able to gain over $500,000 in investment. This is quite a lot lower than previous years, where dozens of projects are capable of grabbing more than half a million in funding.
The fall of Kickstarter funding hits right when Early Access is becoming a more acceptable model. Comparing both models, it is much easier for indies to use Early Access, make money for more than one month and continue to work on development with the community.
A lot of large Kickstarters have failed to bring the ideal game to the community, further ruining the reputation of Kickstarter for games. Double Fine Productions is perhaps the most noteable, having more than one highly successful Kickstarter that failed to budget correctly, and ended up asking for even more money from the community.
In a time where gamers are putting more and more money into uncertain projects, it is actually questionable if Early Access and Kickstarter are good for the industry. When a triple-A title comes out, it is reviewed and the final package is ready to download, whereas with Early Access and Kickstarter, you are essentially paying for a finished game in a few years.
