Asian-American biochemist Robert Tjian was nominated under the medicine or physiology category. Tjian contributed his studies and work on eukaryotic transcription. He works at the University of California, Berkeley and heads the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. Tjian was also elected to a seat in Academia Sinica Taiwan in 1990.
Stanford University’s Shoucheng Zhang has also been nominated for a Nobel Prize under the physics category. Zhang is best known for his topological insulators work. In 2012, Zhang taught as a visiting professor at the National Taiwan University.
The two other contenders for the Nobel Prize are Chinese-American nano materials expert, chemist and University of California, Berkeley professor Peidong Yang and physical chemist Ching W Tang.
Tang was known for his contribution in the society including his organic light emitting diode (OLED) invention. OLED is found in computer monitors, television sets and mobile phones.
This year, a total of 27 people from nine countries were nominated in six categories for the Nobel Prize 2014. This is also the first time four Chinese contenders were nominated for the prestigious award.
In the 1970s, Zhang and Yang were regarded as world-class scientists in China. This was after the country opened its policy and reformed systems in the government.
Meanwhile, Thomson Reuters, an information and worldwide media company, has been correctly predicting a total of 35 Nobel Prize winners from 2002. The company said all of the Chinese-American nominees would be able to take home the award for this year’s prestigious Nobel laureate.
