Driverless Cars Just Five to Six Years Away

Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk says that driverless cars are only five or six years away.
Tesla Motors (TSLA) CEO Elon Musk unveiled the 2014 Edition Model S earlier this week, with a new dual-motor giving the car all-wheel-drive and autopilot that has some driverless car tracking. This allows the car to automatically change speed, slow down at traffic and be "summoned remotely" on private property.

These new autopilot features raised questions about the future of driverless cars, but Musk is not enthusiastic as most on how long it will take to reach this driverless stage, saying "maybe five or six years from now, drivers can literally get in the car, go to sleep, and wake up at (their) destination."
Google (GOOG) has been working on this ambitious idea for a few years now, but has not given any measurement of when the driverless car will be ready for the roads. San Francisco is offering roads for Google to try and some states are looking at lifting regulation on driverless cars within the next year.
The first batch of these driverless cars will most likely take on the same features as the Model S. Capable of adjusting speed based on signs, stopping at traffic and moving lanes, but nothing more. The driver will always need to be in the seat and ready to take control of the vehicle.
A true driverless experience, according to co-founder of Google Sergey Brin, will be different from what cars are today. The car will look more like a taxi, allowing more room to rest your feet and work on other things, while the car goes from point-A to point-B.
Regulations are only part of the problem Google, Tesla and other driverless car manufacturers will face in the future. Designing a road map and system where the car can understand everything on the road is going to take many years to develop.
Musk has a lot of projects coming in the next few years, the Model X and lower-cost Model 3 will be Tesla Motors next steps in the industry, along with Musk's other venture SpaceX looking to get into space and hopefully, within the next decade, onto Mars.
