Microsoft said the next-gen Surface Pro solutions currently in development will be compatible with existing peripherals. This to convince IT managers it's a solid choice for years to come.
Microsoft, however, didn't mention anything about the future of the Surface consumer version.

Microsoft's Surface general manager Brian Hall said the company understands the need for businesses to understand their hardware and accessories so they can make responsible investment choices.
Previous Microsoft Surface tablets didn't make it big for different reasons but the new Surface Pro appears to be on the right track. No supplier ships anything similar to the device.
Microsoft, however, remains coy with sales figures but the known numbers still don't look good. It has rolled out three hardware generations but the Surface group still reported total losses of up to US$1.7 billion.
Surface Pro 3 is a full-powered tablet and PC and is a one-of-a-kind in the market. Even if Surface Pro is behind HP EliteBook and Lenovo ThinkPad sales, Microsoft continues to evolve solutions to maintain features and backwards compatibility.
The Surface Pro 3 is compatible with the next-gen Type Cover, power adaptor, Docking Station, and Ethernet adapter, among others. Hall didn't reveal when or what a new Surface Pro might arrive or look like.
Microsoft unveiled its latest gen professional-grade Surface Pro 3 in May. This model was made available in the U.S. in June and in the UK and 25 countries in August.
