Kim Jong-un's Re-Appearance Stirs More Questions On Health And Power

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un's reappearance after 40 days in limbo triggered more speculations about his health and ability to maintain power rather than ease public concerns.  The descendant of former president Kim Jong-il was recently seen visiting a cluster of houses for national scientists who built a long-range rocket in December 2012, the Korean News Central Agency reported.

Kim was seen inspecting Wisong Scientists Residential District and an energy research building moving happily with a cane on the left leg.  He was accompanied by Vice Marshal Hwang Pyong-so, the chief army officer and second in line in the political hierarchy.

This further corroborates Rodong Sinmun's report that the supreme leader is suffering from a serious health condition.  Since his last attended public event, Kim lost 20 kilograms from May while doctors advise him that gluttony will only worsen his leg problems and perhaps other serious illnesses, Donald Kirk, a Forbes commentator, wrote.

Before Tuesday, 31-year-old Kim was not able to attend a number of high-profile social events including the visit to his father and grandfather's mausoleum and the 69th anniversary of the founders of the Workers' Party last Friday.

According to Lim Byeong Cheol, a representative from Seoul's Unification Ministry, Kim's public appearance is crucial to maintain peace and order.  Otherwise, his absence would raise "anxiety among North Korean residents would have grown and calls by outsiders for contingency plans on dealing with North Korea would have gotten momentum," he continued.

Meanwhile, Bruce Cumings, an expert on Korean culture, said that Kim Jong-un's disappearance is probably intended to draw attention from Europe and United States in matters of diplomatic offense.

Aside from the cane and a couple of pounds lost, Kim seems to be in the pink of health and remains capable of running the government, Cheong said.  Political critics added that his return amid physical pain does not necessarily win public's sympathy and global positioning.
