CDC, White House Reject Mandatory Ebola Quarantines

The White House on Monday urged health workers and travelers from countries with Ebola outbreak to voluntarily isolate themselves instead of relying on statewide quarantine policies.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends individuals with suspected Ebola symptoms to conduct a 21-day voluntary isolation. The CDC added it would be less rigorous if precautionary measures are carried out by the people to avoid conflict with the White House.

Last week, Governor Chris Christie ordered a mandatory quarantine to a nurse stationed in a Newark Hospital. Kaci Hickox, who has just returned from a mission with Doctors Without Borders in Sierra Leone, was sent home via private transport for isolation.
Hickox criticized the decision, but an unapologetic Christie said it is his responsibility to protect the people of New Jersey. White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest commented that the treatment to Hickox was "really inhumane," emphasizing that her dedication should be given respect and honor.
CDC Director Dr. Tom Frieden also appealed to those who may have direct contact to Ebola to wear protective masks or suits and to avoid cramped areas such as public vehicles or offices.
Ebola suspects are also banned from air travel, while a public health aide is assigned to monitor their body temperature twice daily. The new CDC guideline supports the Obama administration's presumption that forced quarantine might trigger fear and discourage volunteers to help the affected West African countries.
Amidst the growing tension concerning Ebola isolation rules, the White House said that state and local officials remain in the frontline of executing policies. Frieden added that CDC is currently in talks with local health departments on rules of engagement in terms of quarantine.
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo refused to give comments, but described CDC's policies placed at a "minimum". He highlighted that "New York is different than a lot of other places in the country" therefore, stricter guidelines should be imposed.
At least 100 people enter the U.S. from Ebola-affected countries. So far, 5.7 percent of 807 passengers screened from October 11 through 25 are health workers. New York, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Georgia are among the most popular destinations of these passengers.
