Microsoft announced on Saturday it will bring the Office 365 subscription service to Mac computers next year, dropping the Office 2011 suite for Mac.

The Redmond-based software giant has been focusing on mobile and tablet deployment over the past year, leading to a delay of Office for Mac. Microsoft released the new version of Outlook for Mac, to show users what to expect from the new Office.

Office on Mac is one of the smallest markets for Microsoft, especially with the tablet version of Office getting excellent reception from most productivity users. Microsoft has still not released numbers on how many mobile sales for Office they have gained in the past year.

The update will offer Office 366 subscription service for $6.99 (for one user) or $9.99 (for up to five users) and a business option. Microsoft will also offer an educational service for a cheaper price for Mac users, but this price drop has not been revealed.

Microsoft is heavily pushing Office 365 with a new unlimited OneDrive incentive. This is the first cloud service provider to offer unlimited data, and for less than a Dropbox Pro membership, it is hard for anyone to pass up.

Office for Mac will come in two stages - an open beta in the second quarter of 2015, followed by the full release in the fourth quarter of 2015. The suite will come with Word, Powerpoint, Excel and OneNote.

Comparative stats for Office and iWork have not been released, but Microsoft has always been the favored productivity service on all platforms. Apple has offered their iWork service for free on iPhone and iPad, to bring in more users.
