(Photo : Reuters ) The commercial edition of the Oculus Rift should be available in "a few months" according to Brendan Iribe, CEO of Oculus.
Virtual reality headset maker Oculus has been closed doors when it comes to commercial editions of the Oculus Rift, claiming it is a few years off and continuing to release developer editions, for the ever larger developer community interested in virtual reality.
Despite this radio silence on the topic of launch day, CEO Brendan Iribe has revealed the Oculus Rift is "months, not years" away from being released as an official consumer product. This is a lot closer than previous estimations from Oculus, claiming the tech still has a long way to go.

Even with Iribe chiming in, it still means the Oculus Rift could be a year and a few months away. Notice the plural for years - Iribe isn't exactly pointing to a late 2014 release. TechCrunch expects the Oculus Rift is more likely to launch in late 2015 or early 2016.
Oculus recently released Crescent Bay, its third developer kit. This has a lot of inbuilt advantages when it comes to depth and motion, making it a full 360 degree virtual reality experience, where previous dev-kits would experience tearing.
Crescent Bay also came with a pair of headphones and a much comfier design, something Oculus is preparing to make even better with the commercial version. This does mean Crescent Bay is most likely to be the last developer version.
Facebook's CEO Mark Zuckerberg has weighed in on the price point for the Oculus Rift, claiming he wants it as cheap as possible. Analysts believe anywhere between $199 and $399 would be reasonable, for the capabilities of the first Oculus Rift.
A cheaper price point may also interest customers in the Oculus Rift, once integrated into the hardware and software, Oculus could sell simulations, games and next-generation headsets for even more revenue.
In the past year, Oculus has tripled its workforce and invested billions in R&D to keep ahead of the game. Valve, Sony, Microsoft and other gaming companies are interested in virtual reality as well, but Oculus appears to be a few steps ahead when it comes to the right way to commercialize the product.
