Aaron Rodgers Ties NFL Record With 6 TD Passes In First Half

Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers took apart the Chicago Bears defense Sunday night, throwing six touchdown passes in the first half on way to a 55-14 Green Bay Packers route of their longtime NFL rival.

The six touchdown passes in a half set a Packers franchise record and tied an NFL record for a half. Rodgers led the Packers to a 42-0 halftime lead and was 18-of-27 passing for 315 yards before he was replaced with the game well in hand midway through the third quarter.

The 190th meeting in the NFL's longest-standing rivalry featured a multitude of milestones, many of them featuring Rodgers and his golden arm. The 55 points scored by the Packers tied their record for most points scored ever at Lambeau Field.

In only one half, Rodgers tied the team touchdown pass record for an entire game he previously shared by Matt Flynn. Rodgers had thrown six touchdown passes on Oct. 14, 2012 against the Houston Texans. Flynn threw six in the final 2011 game against the Detroit Lions.

Rodgers also tied the six TD passes in a half record set by Oakland Raiders quarterback Daryle Lamonica on Oct. 19, 1969.

Just two weeks after injuring his left hamstring, Rodgers looked good to go from the very start of the game with his 16th scoring pass of more than 70 yards. That broke a record he shared with Brett Favre, his Green Bay predecessor and Peyton Manning of the Denver Broncos.

The Packers and Bears each had a bye week before tangling in the Sunday night contest. The Packers rebounded from a loss to the New Orleans Saints to go to 6-3. The Bears headed in the other direction falling to 3-6 after losing their fifth of the last six games.

The story of the game though belonged to Cal Berkeley product Rodgers. He seemingly was unstoppable.

Rodgers first scoring strike was a 4-yard pass to tight end Andrew Quarless near the end of the first quarter. He followed that up with an early 40-yards second quarter touchdown strike to Wideout Jordy Nelson.

The next Rodgers TD pass relied on some heavy lifting by star running back Eddie Lacy. Rodgers tossed an outside screen with Lacy turning it into a 56-yard score putting the Packers up by 35 points.

Rodgers ended up throwing two touchdown passes to Nelson, and one each to Quarless, Lacy, Randall Cobb and Brandon Bostick. Flynn relieved him with the Packers leading 45-7 about eight minutes into the third quarter.
