Sexist Barbie Book Blasted For Targeting Women In Computer Engineering

In 2010, Mattel released a Computer Engineer Barbie, an additional type of Barbie to the many kinds of work that Barbie supposedly has. It generated quite a buzz but a book called "Barbie: I Can Be A Computer Engineer" has made heads turn and eyebrows raise.

The book was released back in 2013 and is dubbed as the most sexist as well as demoralizing representation of women in computer engineering and generally in the tech world. The content of the book has been reviewed by novelist and screenwriter Pamela Ribbon recently and after seeing it at a friend's house.

She expressed her dismay at how much the content was out of touch from reality. Here's the plot: Barbie aims to be a computer engineer and is working on a game idea, which is to teach girls about computers using puppies. Somewhere in the book, Barbie just designs it without doing any programming and coding.

Later in the book, Barbie finds her laptop infected with a virus then infects her little sister's computer as well. Her teacher, a female, in computer science then teaches her how to backup her files then eventually repair the infected laptop. However, she again needs the help of her male friends to get the job done.

So came the outrage on the social networking sites. CEOs, female computer engineers, stars and other female figures who are into the field shared their version of the book as well as their thoughts about it.

Zoe Fraade Blanar, an NYU adjunct professor and coder said Barbie's "virus" dilemma was not really a computer virus. Rather, it arose from her neglecting to restart her computer for a long time, causing it to run very slow, Blanar added.

Sophie Houser, the 17-year-old creator of the game "Tampon Run", also dished out her opinion on Barbie's coding adventure.

"Dear Barbie, with your thin plastic hands, some creativity and some spunk, you can code whatever your heart desires."
