The news comes from China.org.cn following a business conference with China Film Group, in which the company mentioned they'd be taking on 24 new movie projects including 19 novel adaptations, and five original film ideas.
Among the 24 new projects, the three films with the highest budgets will reportedly be for three of Liu's novels. These include The Era of Supernova with the highest budget of $60 million, The Wandering Earth at a budget of $50 million, and the $40 million dollar Micro Era.
According to the report, Liu's The Rural Teacher and Three Body trilogy will also be included. And to ensure the films are successful, the science fiction writer has signed on to personally adapt the movies' screenplays from his novels.
In addition, Ning Hao will direct The Rural Teacher. Hao is climbing in popularity with his latest Breakup Buddies film, which has grossed 1.16 billion yuan ($189 million) within the first two months of its release, making it one of the most popular movies ever in China.
The first installment of the trilogy Three Body is one of Liu's most famous novels and was actually the first Chinese science-fiction novel to be translated into English. The series earned Liu the Galaxy Award, which is the highest honor one can receive in the science-fiction industry.
The eight-time Galaxy Award winner is one of the most renowned science fiction writers in China, and China Film Group is looking to capitalize on his success by adapting his novels into successful films.
